Explore Things to Do In Cambodia Kompot
Known for its stunning jungle temples and rich history, Cambodia also boasts a beautiful coast with charming towns often overlooked by visitors. Kampot and Kep, located in the south-eastern part of Cambodia, are two such notable gems. Both towns offer a blend of natural beauty, colonial charm, and a vibrant local culture. Whether you are an adventurous backpacker or seeking a more luxurious getaway, Kampot and Kep have something for everyone. The charming colonial architecture heavily reflects Kampot’s historical role as an important trading port during the French colonial era. The town was important for the spice trade with Kampot because it was renowned for its unique pepper. Just off the coast, Kep, once a popular seaside resort and retreat for the French elite, has retained much of its old-world charm and is famous today for its delicious seafood and, most notably, its wonderful crab market. Most toursit customers consistently reserve The Ideal 7-Day Cambodia Itinerary, which is an enjoyable excursion.

Whether traveling independently or with a private tour guide, you may be wondering if it is worth adding Kampot and Kep to your itinerary. Having lived in Cambodia for several years, in this article I will share my thoughts as we explore how to get there, the top things to see and do, and accommodation options for all budgets.
How to get there
The advantage of hiring a private tour guide
There are many benefits to hiring a private tour guide in Cambodia, given the number of places of interest countrywide. For example, Kampot and Kep are a full day away from Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. Using local transport can sometimes eat into your valuable time, especially if you don’t have a lot of it! Using a private tour guide takes all the hassles of planning your itinerary, scheduling, and arranging transportation out of your hands. This allows you to sit back and relax in comfort, knowing that the details have been taken care of. With a private tour guide, you will also gain incredible insights into the country’s rich history and cultural heritage, and oftentimes make a friend for life, as I have done with my previous guides. Should you be looking for a reputable guide, I highly recommend Mr. Rain, who is so passionate about showing people the side of Cambodia that many tourists miss. He will welcome you, create an itinerary to suit your preferences, and deliver. Hiring Mr. Rain as a tour guide was one of the best investments I could have made on my first visit to Cambodia. He provided not only wonderful company and insight but also acted as an interpreter when I needed it. Having that connection with a local only enriched my experience in Cambodia. So if you’re short on time, consider using a private tour guide Cambodia to take you around the country and get you there worry-free. You can find Mr. Rain at Private Angkor Wat Tour
If traveling independently, there are several options:
From Phnom Penh
- By Bus
Buses to Kampot and Kep are frequent and inexpensive from Phnom Penh, the country’s capital. The journey takes about 4–5 hours and costs around $8–$10. Giant Ibis is one of the most well-known bus companies, although there are a plethora of other bus and minibus services available. Air-conditioned and generally spacious, buses can become crowded in high season, so it’s advisable to book in advance to guarantee the availability of your desired service.
- By Train:
From Phnom Penh, the Royal Railway offers a scenic and leisurely train ride to Kampot. Although the train is slower than the bus, the journey offers a unique experience, as you will pass through picturesque rural landscapes and a beautiful national park. Costing around $8 and taking approximately 5–6 hours, the train has comfortable seating and a small dining car for snacks and beverages, as well as allowing you to interact with the locals.
- By private taxi:
For a more comfortable and speedier journey, you can hire a private taxi from Phnom Penh. A taxi costs $65–$115 and takes around 3–4 hours, making it a convenient option for groups or families. You can book the taxis through your hotel or online. It is advisable to negotiate the price while booking to avoid any surprises on arrival at your destination.
From Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is another south coast destination, known for its beaches and being the gateway to the islands, making it a convenient stopover before heading to Kampot and Kep (or vice versa!). Buses and minibuses run regularly, with the journey taking 2–3 hours and costing around $10. There is a daily train service costing around $10, or you can take a private taxi, which costs $45–$60.
From Siem Reap
For travelers journeying from Siem Reap to Kampot, several options are available. There are direct buses taking around 8–10 hours and costing $20–$30. Being in the northern part of the country and at the greatest distance from Kampot, you may wish to split the journey and stop off to explore the capital, Phnom Penh, en route. You can fly from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and continue your journey using one of the previously mentioned routes (buses also run to Kampot directly from the airport).
Things to do in Kampot
- Explore the Riverside Promenade.
The riverside and the streets around it are the town’s heart. The many cafes and restaurants lining the riverside offer stunning views of the river and Bokor Mountain. It’s perfect for enjoying a leisurely stroll or bike ride, stunning sunsets over the water, and, in the evening, watching the promenade come alive with street vendors selling local snacks and souvenirs.
- Visit Bokor Mountain. Located just outside Kampot lies Bokor National Park, a must-visit for nature lovers. The park boasts lush forests and waterfalls, and the French built the Bokor Hill Station in the 1920s. Scattered around the mountain are abandoned old French colonial buildings, including a church and a casino, adding a touch of historical intrigue to your visit. The park is home to monkeys, birds, and a host of other wildlife, which you may see on the ascent. The summit offers the most incredible panoramic vistas of the south coast, where you will see not only Kampot and the salt fields far below, but also the coastline, stretching from the islands in the west to Vietnam in the east. To get there, why not hire a scooter, a tuk tuk, or simply join one of the many tours offered?
Kampot Pepper Plantations
Kampot is famous for its world-class pepper, so take advantage of the opportunity to visit a pepper plantation. There are several plantations offering guided tours where you will see the entire process, from planting to harvesting. It’s hard not to be impressed by the variety of peppers, their unique aromas, and their differing flavors. I had no idea pepper could be so varied and used in so many different cuisines, from savory to sweet. Why not indulge in a meal at the farm’s restaurant, where freshly harvested pepper seasonings the dishes, after the tour?
- Explore the caves.
Kampot is home to several fascinating caves, including Phnom Chhngok Cave Temple. The caves not only make for an exciting adventure with hidden shrines, stalactites, and stalagmites, but also house a pre-Angkorian shrine dedicated to Shiva, adding a touch of cultural and historical dimension to your visit. For the very adventurous, the Climbodia group offers tours that include abseiling , climbing, and caving.
- River Activities
Kampot’s life revolves around the river! The stunning Prek Kampot River is Kampot’s central feature, offering numerous excursions and activities for travelers. One of the river’s highlights is known as “The Green Cathedral,” which is a section of the river upstream surrounded by rich green mangrove forests that form a natural tunnel-like water channel.
- Kayaking in the Green Cathedral
For more adventure and an intimate river experience, rent a kayak and paddle through this very serene and picturesque environment. Surrounded by lush green walls and the sounds of nature, you will enjoy the peaceful journey at your own pace and have the opportunity to get a closer look at the wildlife. Several spots along the river offer kayak rentals, and you can also arrange guided tours. It really was an unforgettable experience, one that sticks in my head.
- Boat Tours:
Kampot has several boat operators offering tours along the river. The tours last a few hours and are an excellent way to see the surrounding countryside, wildlife, and local river dwellings set against the spectacular mountain views. Sunset cruises and party boats are also popular, offering stunning views as the hot Cambodian sun sets. Some of these tours also stop at riverside attractions and floating restaurants.
Kampot Nightlife
After dark, Kampot comes to life and offers a variety of experiences that cater to everyone’s needs and tastes, making it a lively yet relaxed destination. With a vast choice of restaurants, pubs, live music venues, and a buzzing night market, the town boasts a vibrant nightlife. There is a healthy blend of locals, visitors, and expats who gather for cold beers or cocktails in the bars, many of which offer live music, showcasing both local and international acts. For those who seek a more refined evening, Kampot has several high-end restaurants offering exquisite culinary experiences and stunning riverside views.
A short walk from the town center leads to the Big Durian roundabout, a bustling area and popular spot for tasting Kampot’s diverse street food. Many locals and visitors gather here to enjoy a casual, delicious meal in the open air. So whether you are in the mood for a quiet drink, a special culinary experience, or a lively night out with friends, Kampot’s nightlife will not disappoint!
Things to do in Kep
Kep is a small and quiet town, 25 kilometers southeast of Kampot. The journey takes around 30–40 minutes by car, tuk-tuk, or motorbike, depending on the road conditions and your mode of transport. Should you choose to base yourself in Kampot, you can easily make it a day trip and enjoy what Kep has to offer.

Kep National Park offers a number of hiking trails with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and coastline. In particular, the “Stairway to Heaven” trail is popular, leading visitors to a viewpoint with panoramic views. The park is also known for its diverse wildlife, including monkeys and exotic birds. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch in this stunning natural environment, or hire a guide for a more informative hike.

Although small, Kep Beach is perfect for relaxing, eating some of the delicious local seafood, and enjoying the sunsets over the calm sea waters. The beach is not crowded, yet it is lined with hammocks, cabanas for hire, and beachfront restaurants, making it an ideal spot for a chilled day out and soaking up the Cambodian sun.
- Visit the Crab Market.
Kep is renowned for its crab, so it’s a must to visit the market, where you can witness the local fishermen bring in their daily haul. Ensure you savor the renowned Kampot pepper crab specialty dish at one of the market’s seafood stalls, or choose and purchase your own seafood by weight from one of the vendors. Then, take it to the beach, where you can have it cooked and served to you at your cabanas for a small fee. The market is relatively small, but it is a bustling and vibrant place, offering a fascinating glimpse into local life as well as a great opportunity to chat and laugh with the locals. It is best to visit earlier in the day; it is a great place to stop off, have lunch, and soak up the market’s lively atmosphere.
- Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay)
From Kep, it is only a short boat ride to Rabbit Island, where you’ll find pristine beaches, clear waters, and a very laid-back atmosphere. Spend the day relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, and enjoying more fresh seafood!
